Ahhh deliciousness… this shake is one healthy fabulous treat!!!!

When I finished my workout this afternoon, I really was in the mood for something nice and refreshing.  I have also been craving chocolate big time! Must be those pregnancy hormones… but then again I ALWAYS crave chocolate. I have a sweet tooth right up there with the best of them. And having a sweet tooth really isn’t such a bad quality to have when you can create sweet treats that are sugar free and actually benefit your health!

This shake took me a grand total of five minutes to make. Which is about how long a snack should take to make otherwise, if you are like me, you will end up snacking on something else while making your snack.

This shake is made with almond milk, a frozen banana, vanilla extract, (raw) cocoa powder, extra virgin coconut oil (or coconut butter), cashew butter (optional) and ice.

Just put all these ingredients plus a few ice cubes into your vitamix/blender/food processor and blend til your desired consistency is reached.

Then pour your shake into a pretty martini glass or a oversized coffee mug, sprinkle with cacao nibs, sprinkles, chocolate chips, whipped cream or whatever your little heart desires.

Chocolate Cake Batter Milkshake adapted from Chocolate Covered Katie

Dairy & Sugar Free, with all raw ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen, large banana, as ripe as possible (I used 1 1/3)
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1-2 T coconut butter (I used extra virgin coconut oil)
  • 1/2 to 2/3 cup milk (I used almond) (For an extremely rich, “ice cream”-like shake, try coconut milk. Also, use more or less, depending on desired thickness.)
  • 1-2 T cocoa powder (I used raw cacao powder)
  • 1 tsp. cashew butter (optional but fabulous)
  • cacao nibs (optional sprinkled topping)

Directions:

Blend everything together in your Vita-Mix or blender. Add some sprinkles, pre-blending, and throw some more on top! Cacao nibs are a healthier option to sprinkle on top if you have any on hand! If you prefer your shake in a bowl, just reduce the milk.

While drinking this shake it is a good idea to wrap yourself up in a few blankets, dogs, or your significant other. This shake is cold but its definitely one that you shouldn’t pass up just because its chilly outside!

P.S. I just couldn’t resist adding spinach to my shake! I am always trying to pack the most nutrients into what I eat, especially because I am pregnant. So, after I took pictures of the original, I poured it back into my vitamix and added 2 large handfuls of organic spinach. The original shake was sooo good just the way it was without the spinach, and I was hesitant at first because of my recent aversion to green vegetables. But I thought, why not just try throwing some in and seeing if I can do it. I am beyond happy that I did, because I couldn’t even tell the difference. Bible, adding spinach to a shake like this is like adding an e to the word love. It is silent. The flavor of spinach is completely undetectable. So if you can add 2 cups of spinach and get tons of important vitamins right in with your milkshake (yes vitamins in a milkshake! crazy huh?!) then WHY NOT? Go for it!!!! I promise you, you will be very proud of yourself after you did. And it might even inspire you to continue trying new things, like maybe kale next time? yes… baby steps.. I know… but I too was once a skeptic like you might be.. until I tested my feet in the green waters and realized it really isn’t so scary after all!

Bon Appetit!

xoxo Jennifer
